What Is MiXto SX® Micro Fractional CO2?

The CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) laser has been a trusted technology in aesthetics for over 25 years, used to treat fine and deep wrinkles, scars, uneven pigmentation, and enlarged pores. When the CO2 beam touches the skin’s surface, it heats and vaporizes targeted tissue, removing damaged layers while smoothing and refining the skin. This process stimulates remodeling, with new skin and collagen forming over time for lasting rejuvenation.

The name MiXto reflects the unique combination of CO2 energy with fractional resurfacing, while SX stands for “surgical”—highlighting the laser’s ability to perform precise, bloodless incisions when needed.

How Does It Work?

The MiXto SX® gives physicians precise control over both the depth of penetration and the amount of heat delivered to the skin. Using a high-speed scanner with a patent-pending algorithm, the treatment area is divided into four quadrants, or “fractions.” The laser beam is applied in a unique pattern, skipping from one quadrant to another so each point receives the longest cooling interval before being treated again.

Does It Hurt?

To keep you comfortable, a compounded topical anesthetic is applied before treatment. For those who need extra relief, oral pain medication can be prescribed—but a driver will be required. We also offer Pro-Nox® (nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas”), which provides additional comfort while allowing you to drive yourself home afterward. Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a strong sunburn.

What Are the Risks?

  • Redness (Erythema): Treated areas may appear red due to increased blood flow and collagen activity. This typically fades within a few days.
  • Swelling (Inflammation): Mild swelling may occur but usually resolves within 24 hours.
  • Temporary Tanning (Hyperpigmentation): Around day three, the skin may appear tanned before naturally shedding to reveal fresh, healthier skin.

Before treatment, a personal consultation and medical history review will be performed to ensure safety, including discussion of past and current medications. Patients prone to cold sores should ask their physician about an antiviral prescription prior to treatment.

What Is The Recovery Like?

The patient is red and can be swollen the next day. On the second, third and fourth day the patient is peeling and can experience a little itchiness typical to a sunburn.

When Will I See Results?

Results start immediately—the skin begins to contract and tighten during the procedure itself. As the peeling process completes, improvements become more visible. Over the following months, continued collagen regeneration enhances the results, with skin looking smoother, firmer, and more refreshed for up to six months after treatment.

After treatment, the skin may appear red for 3–5 days. A soothing moisturizer or post-procedure topical, such as Neova® Copper Cream, can be applied during this time. For optimal results, we recommend a series of three treatments spaced 3–6 weeks apart. Sessions are quick—about 15 minutes for under-eye treatment and 30 minutes for the full face and neck. A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to ensure comfort.
