Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that uses pulsed laser energy to target and remove unwanted hair while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. Common treatment areas include the chin, upper lip, chest, underarms, back, bikini line, and legs.
Book OnlineWhile temporary methods such as shaving, tweezing, depilatory creams, and waxing are available, patients who want a longer-lasting, less irritating solution are often excellent candidates for laser hair removal. This safe and generally comfortable procedure can remove hair from almost any part of the body, with the exception of the eye area due to potential risks.
Candidates for Laser Hair Removal
The laser works by targeting melanin (pigment) in the hair, making individuals with dark hair and light skin the best candidates. Those with blonde, red, gray, or white hair and darker skin tones may not achieve the same results. However, advances in technology have improved effectiveness for patients with darker skin, and ongoing research is exploring ways to better treat light-colored hair.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
- Precisely targets unwanted hair
- Treatment sessions are quick
- Results are permanent for many patients, or long-lasting
- Most patients experience little to no pain, though some describe a mild snapping sensation against the skin
Laser Hair Removal Procedure
A topical anesthetic is often applied before treatment to numb the area. Using a handheld device, the physician delivers focused pulses of laser energy to individual hair follicles. Some techniques may combine laser with radiofrequency for enhanced results, with the method tailored to each patient’s needs.
Because hair grows in cycles, treatment is most effective during the anagen (active growth) phase, when follicles are most responsive to laser energy. Since not all hairs are in the same growth phase at once, multiple sessions—typically three to five spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart—are required for optimal results. Treatment length may also depend on hair texture and the treatment area.
Recovery from Laser Hair Removal
Mild redness, swelling, or soreness may occur immediately after treatment, usually resolving within a few days. Relief can be achieved with cold compresses, moisturizers, or anti-inflammatory creams. Patients are advised to avoid sun exposure for a period following treatment.
Possible Complications
The most common issue after laser hair removal is hair regrowth, though new growth is often finer and lighter than before. Additional sessions can address this regrowth effectively. Other potential side effects include skin irritation (such as blistering or crusting), changes in pigmentation or skin texture, and in rare cases, scarring.
